Elvis Presley wanted to record Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You in 1974, and the reason he never did comes down to a single phone call. The session was booked and Parton had been invited to the studio, but the night before, manager Colonel Tom Parker told her Elvis would only record it if he received half the publishing rights. She said no and later admitted she cried all night over the decision. Eighteen years later Whitney Houston recorded her version for The Bodyguard, it became one of the best selling singles of all time, and Parton kept every penny of the copyright she refused to give away.

Remembering Dolly Parton, 1946 to 2026.
