John Lennon and Paul McCartney met on July 6, 1957, at the St. Peter’s Church Garden Fête in Woolton, Liverpool.

A mutual friend, Ivan Vaughan, introduced 15-year-old Paul to 16-year-old John between sets in the church hall.

John was performing with his skiffle group, The Quarrymen. Because he didn’t know all the words to The Del-Vikings' "Come Go with Me", he made up his own blues-style lyrics on the spot (like "down, down, down to the penitentiary").

Paul impressed John by playing Eddie Cochran’s "Twenty Flight Rock" and Gene Vincent’s "Be-Bop-A-Lula", followed by Little Richard songs on the piano. Paul knew all the correct lyrics and chords.

Paul blew John away simply by knowing how to properly tune a six-string guitar. Up to that point, John’s mother, Julia, had taught him banjo chords, so John played guitar tuned like a banjo (using only four strings).

A couple of weeks later, while Paul was out cycling, Quarrymen member Pete Shotton ran into him and officially delivered John's invitation to join the band.
