Paul McCartney didn’t start out on guitar or bass. For his fourteenth birthday, his father Jim gave him an instrument Jim himself had played when he was younger.

Paul actually learned to play it, but rock and roll presented a problem: he wanted to sing while accompanying himself. That decision eventually led him to the guitar he used to learn “Twenty Flight Rock,” the song that helped impress John Lennon.
