### Before the Beatles Became Legends

Welcome to Strawberry Field, one of the most famous places associated with The Beatles.

Located in the Liverpool suburb of Woolton, this quiet site became world-famous because of one unforgettable song written by John Lennon.

But long before it inspired music, Strawberry Field was simply part of John's childhood.

---

Just a short walk from John's childhood home at Mendips, Strawberry Field was originally a Salvation Army children's home.

As a young boy, John Lennon often wandered here with friends.

Although children were not normally allowed inside, the surrounding gardens and open spaces became a place where his imagination could run free.

Every summer, the Salvation Army held a garden fête.

John loved listening to the brass band, watching the crowds, and escaping into the peaceful surroundings.

Many years later, these childhood memories would return in one of the Beatles' most celebrated songs.

---

In 1966, while recovering from exhaustion, John began writing *Strawberry Fields Forever*.

Rather than describing the place exactly as it was, the song blended memory, imagination and dream-like images.

John once explained that Strawberry Field represented a place where he could escape reality.

The famous line,

*"Nothing is real..."*

captures the feeling that childhood memories are often a mixture of fact, imagination and emotion.

---

Today, Strawberry Field has become much more than a Beatles landmark.

The site is now owned and managed by The Salvation Army.

It includes peaceful gardens, an exhibition about John Lennon's childhood, and programmes supporting young adults with learning disabilities through training and employment.

Visitors from around the world come here not only because of the Beatles, but also to experience the calm atmosphere that inspired one of the greatest songwriters in history.

---

Standing here today, it's easy to imagine the young John Lennon looking through these gardens, listening to music drifting across the summer air, and dreaming of a much bigger world beyond Liverpool.

No one could have imagined that this ordinary place would one day become part of music history.

---
For Beatles fans, Strawberry Field is more than a tourist attraction.

It is a place where childhood memories became timeless music.

Sometimes, the places that shape our lives are the quietest ones.

Thank you for watching.
