Paul McCartney began “Martha My Dear” as a two-handed piano exercise and later admitted that it sat slightly above his normal playing level. Only after writing the music did Martha, the Old English Sheepdog he had waited since childhood to own, find her way into the song.

Older personnel lists sometimes credited Paul with nearly every instrument. However, the 2018 White Album session notes place Ringo Starr’s drums and George Harrison’s rhythm guitar together on the original multitrack. John Lennon did not attend the session.
