Before “Yellow Submarine” became one of the Beatles’ happiest singalongs, John Lennon was developing its verse as a slow, melancholy acoustic song. The archival tapes released with Revolver in 2022 revealed how Lennon’s sad fragment was combined with Paul McCartney’s cheerful chorus before the group filled Abbey Road with bubbles, water, sand, and clinking glasses.
