December 1994—Maureen Starkey dies of leukemia at just 48, leaving three children: Zak, Jason, and Lee. Paul McCartney had known her since the Beatles years—and her death deeply affected him. Instead of writing her children a letter, Paul wrote a song: “Little Willow.” He later said, “It’s heartfelt— instead of writing her kids a letter I wrote a song.” In 1995, he recorded it with Jeff Lynne; in 1997, it appeared on Flaming Pie. Paul said he wanted it “for her and her kids.” Maureen was gone. Her children had lost their mother. Paul couldn’t bring her back. So he left them something that could outlive grief—a song carrying the memory of the woman they loved.
