Paul McCartney built “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” around a catchphrase used by Nigerian conga player Jimmy Scott. Scott even played on the Beatles’ first completed recording, but Paul scrapped that version and started again.
The released White Album track was shaped by John Lennon’s pounding piano introduction, another abandoned remake without Ringo, and Paul’s accidental switch of Desmond and Molly’s roles.
Sources include The Beatles Anthology, Mark Lewisohn’s The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, and official Beatles recording credits.
