Paul McCartney built the racing bass part in “I Saw Her Standing There” from the bass line in Chuck Berry’s “I’m Talking About You,” a song the Beatles had already performed in Hamburg and on the BBC. McCartney later openly acknowledged using the same notes because they worked so well beneath his new song.
The recording contained another hidden piece of recycling. George Martin selected take one as the master performance, but attached Paul’s more energetic count-in from take nine to the beginning. One of the Beatles’ most spontaneous-sounding early recordings was carefully assembled from ideas and performances that already existed.
